ACTIVITIES

Every year, generally in early October, the IAF together with its associates the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the International Institute of Space Law (IISL), holds the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) which is hosted by one of the national societies, a member of the IAF. It lasts one week.

The IAC is a major annual milestone where people can meet, exchange, learn, promote and summarise activity over the year, celebrate success and share lessons and experience.

The profile of the IAC is changing and evolving. The plenary events attract newcomers to our Congress, including captains of industry and top-level scientists.

2010

The 61st International Astronautical Congress is taking place in Prague, Czech Republic between 27 September and 1 October 2010.

The International Astronautical Congress comes back into this geographical region of Central and Eastern Europe after a quarter of century. During that time, countries in this part of Europe went through dramatic period of their history. Political, economical and societal changes have essentially influenced all parts of life of their citizens. Activities in space have been no exception. After slowing down the volume of space activities during main transition phase, the Czech Republic has gradually developed new space infrastructure and became the 18th member of the European Space Agency in 2008.

The Global Lunar Conference (GLUC), co-organised by the International Astronautical Federation and the Chinese Society of Astronautics took place in Beijing, China in May and June 2010.

Our desire to return to the Moon is irrefutable proof of the human need to constantly explore new and distant horizons. Such plans are an important element in encouraging nations to work together in the interests of peaceful cooperation in outer space.

Lunar missions will lead us to new understanding of the origin and the development of our Solar System. They will open new avenues towards a utilisation of lunar resources that could be used in both the exploration of outer space and here on planet Earth.

In organising this conference, the IAF demonstrated its continuing commitment to international cooperation, scientific investigation, technological development; helping to solve legal issues which will stimulate the peaceful use of the Moon.
