The COP 28 UN Climate Change Conference

30 November – 12 December 2023
Dubai, United Arab Emirates

COP28 wrapped up the first big review of how well the world is dealing with climate change according to the Paris Agreement. It found progress was slow in all aspects, like cutting greenhouse gases and getting help to countries most affected by climate change. To speed things up, countries responded with a decision on how to accelerate action across all areas by 2030. This includes a call on governments to move faster toward using clean energy like wind and solar power instead of relying so much on fossil fuels.
It was the first COP attended by the IAF and a very successful experience. During COP28 The UAE Space Agency, the member of IAF since 2016, has organized a “Space Agencies Leaders’ Summit”, witnessing participation from more than 20 international space agencies and international organizations. The Summit represented a milestone that underscored the vital role of the space sector in confronting climate challenges and finding innovative solutions to support sustainability. The IAF presented the results of the first Global Space Conference on Climate Change (2023) during a dedicated fireside chat with Christian Feichtinger, IAF Executive Director and Christian Hauglie-Hanssen, Director of the Norwegian Space Agency (NOSA) which hosted GLOC 2023.
The IAF was also invited to contribute on a high-level panel session on the Digital Day "Harmonizing Environmental Data: Towards a Global Environmental Data Strategy" held on 6 December 2023 at the UNEP Pavilion. The IAF shared the priorities and opportunities identified from GLOC 2023 of space as a toolbox for climate action.
