Reinhold Ewald

Reinhold Ewald, born on December 18, 1956, in Mönchengladbach, Germany, is a physicist and retired astronaut. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physics from the University of Cologne, where he also completed his Ph.D. in 1986, with a minor in human physiology. His early research focused on the structure and dynamics of interstellar molecular clouds, contributing to projects such as the assembly of a radio telescope at the Gornergrat Observatory in Switzerland.

In 1987, Ewald joined the German Aerospace Center (DLR), managing various extraterrestrial science projects before joining the German national astronaut team in 1990. After training in Russia, he participated in the Mir '97 mission, spending 18 days aboard the Mir space station, where he conducted experiments in biomedical and material sciences.

Ewald joined the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1999, where he played a key role in managing operations for several Soyuz missions and the integration of ESA’s Columbus laboratory module into the International Space Station (ISS). He held leadership roles within ESA, including Head of the ISS Mission Integration and Operations Division.

In addition to his work in space exploration, Ewald has been an educator, lecturing at the Technical University of Munich, the International Space University in Strasbourg, and later, as a Professor of Astronautics and Space Stations at the University of Stuttgart.

Following his retirement from ESA in 2018, Ewald continues to contribute to the space community as Chair of the IAF Astronauts Administrative Committee (AAC) and President of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE).
