Sona Guliyeva

Ms. Sona Guliyeva is PhD researcher specializing in Urban and Regional Development at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. With extensive expertise in geospatial sciences and education, she served as the Lead GIS Trainer at the Space Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azercosmos) from 2020 to 2023 and as a Lecturer at the National Aviation Academy from 2018 to 2023. In September 2023, she was honored with an invitation to teach a GIS course at the French-Azerbaijani University. Sona holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (2016) and a master’s degree in Aerospace Monitoring in Environmental Engineering from the National Aviation Academy (2018). During her master's studies, Sona's academic prowess was acknowledged through several Best Paper Certificates at national conferences starting from 2017. She secured first place in a competition during a “Latest trends in engineering education for future industry” summer school at the Technical University of Berlin in 2018.
Sona has authored over 25 scientific papers and actively contributed to various scholarly events, including seminars, internships, and masterclasses. She has presented at numerous prestigious conferences, symposiums, and congresses, notably the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), where she was an active participant in 2020 (virtual), 2022 (Paris), GLOC 2023 (Oslo), and 2023 (Baku). Her remarkable achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Young Scientist Award at the URSI Asia-Pacific Radio Science Conference in 2019 and the "ISNET's Outstanding Award Program on Implementing SDGs through Space Science and Technology" during the 3rd International Conference on Space (ISC-2022) in Pakistan. Her outstanding contributions were recognized with the Young Pioneer Award (Luigi G. Napolitano) at the IAC 2023.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Sona is deeply engaged in international organizations, having served as a board member of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Student Consortium (ISPRS SC) from 2019 to 2022. Currently, she continues her commitment to global collaboration as a board member of the Central Asia Geospatial Community (CAGC) since 2023, and since 2024, she has been a member of the Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIDAA). Through her active involvement, Sona underscores her dedication to advancing geospatial technology and fostering global collaboration.
