The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of the most historical universities in Hong Kong. The origin of the institution, the Government Trade School, was founded in 1937. The School was the first publicly funded, post-secondary technical institution in Hong Kong. In 1947, it was renamed as the Hong Kong Technical College. In 1972, it became the Hong Kong Polytechnic. In 1994, it was further renamed as the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). PolyU's motto is "To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind," and it strives to be a leading university in knowledge transfer, providing quality holistic education and contributing to Hong Kong, the nation, and the world.

PolyU currently consists of 9 faculties and schools, including Science, Engineering, Construction and Environment, Business, Health and Social Sciences, Humanities, Fashion and Textiles, Design, and Hotel and Tourism Management, managing 31 departments and teaching centers, over 40 research laboratories, research institutes, and research centers, as well as 2 state key laboratories (State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology and State Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery) and 2 Hong Kong Branches of Chinese National Engineering Research Centers (Chinese
