Swedish Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics

Association and Professional SocietyMember since 1960

The Swedish Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics (FTF) is a non-profit and independent association to promote aerospace technology activities in Sweden. The FTF constitutes since 1968 a merger of the Swedish Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics formed 1933, and the Swedish Interplanetary Society, formed in 1950. The Swedish Interplanetary Society was one of the founding members of the IAF in 1951. Currently, the FTF counts about 1 200 members. The main branch is in Stockholm, and in five more local branches are established in significant cities for aerospace in Sweden. Gothenburg is focused on aerospace electronic developments, Kiruna is “space city”, Linköping “the capital of aircraft development and production", Malmö and nearby Eslöv harbours a significant factory for innovative light aeroplanes and Trollhättan is the centre for the development of aero- and rocket engines. Every third year the FTF holds an Aerospace Technology Congress in Stockholm, gathering more than 300 delegates and about 150 oral paper presentations and an Exhibition of Products and Services. The latest Congress was in 2019, and the next one will be held on behalf of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) in September 2022. Locally, seminars and lectures on contemporary aerospace technology matters are held for members. Moreover, an electronic 20+ pages newsletter, Bevingat, is published six times a year, unfortunately only in Swedish. Every year the Society awards the Thulin medal to reward distinctive achievements within the aerospace technology. Dr Thulin was a pioneer in the Swedish aeronautics in the early 1900s.
